Column I
I made this piece after Bill's first cancer diagnosis (he had three diagnoses over a period of many years). This column is made from cardboard tubing attached to a wooden base on the top and bottom. It stands 5' tall and is on an 18" square base with lathe turned round forms connecting to the cardboard. This column was a way for me to deal with death -- everything glued on it was no longer living. For example, there are dried flowers, dried sea horses, glass objects, and pearls. Yet, when I finished this piece, it felt like a celebration of life, rather than a symbol for death. |
